Time to start (photography)

In class I started to look more in-depth into the Jim Goldberg. I my opinion the genius of his work is in the explanation of that the text brings to the images. However the power is still kept in the images themselves. I point of my rambling is that the images still have to be strong and well constructed in there composition for the image to be strong over all. All of the elements have to be high quality. This means that all of the skills that I have learned will have to be used to make the images look good alongside the text.

Outside of the classroom I began making the images for my final piece. I am going to make images that reflect my personal opinions about things using the text and imagery. The text will be made buy had and physicality placed into the images. I don't want to use Photoshop for the images unless I have to make then black and white and can't to it with the camera. The first image will be about feminism and its anti sociality mentality. Briefly I what to demonstrate that it one is to stay in society they must participate regardless. I wanted to have an image of a woman participating in sexual acts and text text to read independent woman. These are some of the image That I took.

I tried different combinations of words but in the end I stuck with "independent black woman" and the bottom image. This is because this is a well know sentence and has its own baggage that I feel adds to the theme when coupled with this image.

The next image that I wanted to make was a statement about the lack of freedom in the UK. My political views are very libertarian and some things like smoking bans really annoy me. I wanted an image of me sitting in the cold naked holding a fag to show the length we have to go to for freedom. This week it snowed and I wanted an picture in the snow however I had no idea when the snow would go so I had to make the image quickly. Further more it was cold so I decided to take the image on automatic and fix any problems in Photoshop later. This is the last time I want to use Photoshop for these images. these are the images that I took.

I took this pictures in the alleyway by my house (way form people). I don't like the lighting and the slanted angle of the image so ill fix these images in Photoshop.

FRESH (textiles)

Decided that I would be good to add some text to my designs seeing as how I like it so much. I researched a bit of Carson and thought of ways that I could make the scarf's, there's all different types like long, extra long skinny so on.I think it might make more scene to make to scarf's, that way I can separate the colours to stop it looking like a rainbow and then I can make to different types. I thinking male and female.
I didn't do as much work as I normal do today, It might be because ideas were just coming together this time instead of been born. Next week I'll start making the scarf's in time for the 6th week. I'm going to reuse the screen form the original prints that I did.this will save time over time.
I want to include everything that I have learned, embroidery, printing and so on so that they were not waisted.

Mid way (Vis-Com)

While I was away for the class in the week I was able to make some characters that I would base my illustration on. They were inspired by a poster I used in my research for my digital apps lessons saul bass. these are the characters.
angle in devils clothing

the angle of death

the mother figure

these in the theme of good and evil. I then went on to make this illustration.

I used the lesson to analyses the illustration and document what I liked and disliked and what could be improved.

7 grams (photography)

We experimented with camera-less photography today. The first part of this was learning about the dark room. There is a red light in the dark room bemuse this is the only type of light that doesn't affect photo paper. the photo paper is placed on a light table and then objects are placed on top of it, I used scissors of the first. You simply have to turn on the white light for seven seconds, and place the paper into the chemical solutions. This is the results.

Also during the week I took pictures around collage that related to high and low perspectives. This can be used to place with dominants and submissiveness and the over all narrative of a photo. This could have been a very a good them and could have plased out wit me making a story board or even a photo movie.

Chakra Garden (textiles)

I started the screen printing process by making the Spiro-graph screen. I documented this process in my sketch book. I proceeded to then make up a series of print to experiment with the Spiro-graph screens. The first was a pink print on a with martial. I found this to be pain however, I was very happy with the print. next I added colour to the background of the material and then proceeded to print the Spiro-graphs onto the newly coloured material. I found that this looked good, however the Spiro-graph print was lost to the background. This was because of an inaccurate use of the colour wheel. I used contrasting colours however the wrong colour was enhanced by this.

Next I added a pattern over the top of the Spiro-graph print. This also seemed to take way for the aesthetic of the Spiro-graphs which is the main reason for the textile.

I then went back to the pain background and layered colours that work well together in this case red and purple. I gig this on a longer piece of martial because I was originally going to do may different prints on this to save space in my book however I like the pattern and that size of the material. This inspired me to make a mini scarf with a similar pattern.

This was the outcome. I decided that I should add some text to the design. Even though the word energy is obvious it would be hidden when around the neck. I also added so embroidery to the design to incorporate that skills I learned prior.

Next I'm going to do some more research into the scarf and type.

Inspiration (Vis-Com)

So far I'v started with making images that use a style that I am used to next I wanted to look and draw inspiration from illustrators and examine who they work. The first of which was an illustrator called Jon Burgerman. Jon is an artist that uses negative space in his illustrations to make new characters and images within an image. this is an example of his work.

This is my version of his work in my own style. I tried to emulate his as closely as possible without making it a carbon copy of his work.

Next I researched the Da Da movement. Propaganda in not a word that I like to use likely. I think the term is far to loaded these days and has to many negative connotations however like how different the style is and the use of style that can come from it.
this has led me to look deeper into type. I didn't want to use typography in this subject because I feel a bit type cast into it however I have come to released that everyone has something that There good at and I am good at typography, and theres no shame in that. If I am going to make a style of my own then it better be my own something that I like.
Next week i'm going to try illustrating with type.

week of work (photography)

I've spent the last week taking pictures that relate to contrasts. Here are some examples.

Depth of field

Text and imagery (didn't make it into sketch book*)

I decided upon text and imagery for my them and stared looking at images on the internet that incorporate the combination of the two. However I don't look like that they have done. I majority seen to fall more under the graphic design field, where as I want to go down a more photography root. To expand on this most of the examples used C.A.D to manipulate the text into the image but what the image itself to hold text. I could do this by taking pictures of text hence the image above*.

Next I going to move on to more in-depth research and producing the beginning of work.

Spiro-Graphic :D (textiles)

I started off with my experiments with Spiro-graphs by drawing some in my sketch book that use the same colours as the Chakras.

I liked the look of the Spiro-graphs in place of the drawn symbols. Also because the markers that I previously used when through to the other page and the Spiro-graphs make it easier to use small markers. The next step was to relate this to textiles. I then had the idea to embroider the Spiro-graphs. There were to ways to do this. The first was to hand embroider and to do it with the sowing machine. I found the hand embroidery to be more successfully as the the sowing machine is not something that I am very used to or good with and so produced results with less quality.

I thought that the best way to expand the field of research would be to explore other ways of  applying the Spiro-graphs to material. I will try screen printing next.

New challenge (Vis-Com)

After my experience with digital applications and my work in my previous collage, I have made a decision that I want to be a graphic designer. Because of this I real what my visual communications to go well for me. This is more than just about trying to pass this part of the path way for me. Through the exploratory stage I came to realise that grate artist's and designers are so because they have something about there work that is special, unique to them and that people want to above all spend there money on. They have a personal style that sets them apart from the crown. I what to be like that. Because of this while I take part in these Vis-Com sessions I'm going to be taking steps towards crafting that style and at the very least coming up with something that I can start to shape into my design image.

Today was the first lesson and we were introduced to the theme of the next 6 weeks which is contrasts. I spent my time in the lesson with two things. The first was a mind map of ideas of different contrasts that I could use and the second was an illustration of one of the contrasts (feast and famine). this resulted in there pages of work in the one day. This is one less that I aim for usually but I am still happy with the results. I know that soon I going to be going on interviews for Vis-Com courses at university's and I plan on bringing along this sketch book and because of this the book has to show off everything I can do and everything about me along with my style in 20 or so pages. lets just say even though the first page is just a mind map I wanted to start off with a bang.

A soon as I open up the book I want the interviewer to be impressed and I think they will be.

This is the illustration that I made of the theme of feast and famine.

Previously I did some work for one of my cousins designing some t-shirts and I used this style of illustration to do so. I thought this would be a grate starting point for me trying to develop and innovative style. Is was very simple but effective and is still capable of conveying a serous message without its cartoon look getting in the way to much and I think this is a good starting point of my development.

How to uses an S.L.R... AT 9 O'CLOCK!!! (photography)

The theme for the photography pathway Is contrast. As usual I stated by listing contrasts in my sketch book. because of the limited time to do the lesson and the groups lack of experience the lesson itself was largely dedicated to the use of the camera and developing key skill (as I assume the majority of the lessons for this pathway will). I learned shutter speed which is the amount of time that the camera lets in light, and F stop witch is the amount of light that is allowed into the camera. with this, I experimented by taking pictures with short and long shutter speeds.

Out of lesson I started to experiment witch photographing images that related to theme of contrast as documented in my sketch book. I began with light and dark and used dome of the zoom burst and focus blur photography and then moved onto text and imagery. I took photos of road signs and and the names of places in Birmingham.

Next I experimented with depth of field on a nice day outside and took a photo of a statue in my house. because of the use of depth of field it made the image look like it was taken in from of a green screen and manipulated.

Finally I took pictures that related to colour and contrasting colours.

I have chosen the theme of text and imagery.

First day (textiles)

The theme for this is Energy. I'm glad that Once again I have been given a theme that is different form the overarching theme that the majority of the pathway subjects follow. It brakes up the work from each other and makes it easer to produce new and different work. I began by making a mined map of ideas of different energy to try to find a starting point. I looked into Gravitation, Renewable and so on but I settled with spiritual energy. I did this because in my zeen for digital applications I focused more on the negative side of spirituality and so I wanted to look at a more positive interpretation.
I decided to look into the Chakra system for the theme of spiritual energy. this is because of the aesthetic of the seven Chakras themselves. I ended buy looking into the Chakras and what they do.

I found that I the Chakras look like flowers and graphically, the Charkras reminded me I of flowers. When I did some more research I found that this was intentional as the Chakras represent different lotus flowers. I then decided that  good graphical way to show flowers and there design is with Spiro-graphs so next week I will experiment with them.
